Ibn al-Jawzi, citing a secondhand report from a
letter that arrived in Baghdad on 17 December 1114 CE,
describes an earthquake that collapsed thirteen towers
and the city walls of
al-Ruha (Şanlıurfa, ancient Edessa),
damaged sections of the walls and numerous houses in
Harran, destroyed about one hundred
houses and half of the citadel at
Balis, and caused
collapses in
Sumaysa (Samosata).
The time and date of the earthquake are given as the
night of Sunday, 18 Jumada II,
A.H. 508, corresponding to
Thursday, 19 November 1114 CE. The disagreement between
the stated day and date likely reflects a scribal or
transmission error, and the correct date is probably the
night of Sunday, 29 November 1114 CE, consistent with
other contemporary accounts.
