Ibn Kathir wrote that in A.H. 508 (7 June 1114 CE – 26 May 1115 CE), there was a great earthquake in al-Jazira, causing the destruction of thirteen towers and many houses in al-Ruha and some houses in Khurasan. The mention of Khurasan seems improbable, as it lies far beyond the likely area affected by the earthquake. Ibn Kathir added that there were one hundred thousand victims in many houses in many countries, that half of the Harran citadel collapsed, and that Samsat was swallowed up, and many people were killed beneath the debris.
